When it comes to the crimped world of hair curling, us mere mortals tend to fall into one of two categories; a spiralled siren or a coiled catastrophe! But worry not my frizzy friends, the pursuit of the perfect curl is not an easy one, it’s just that hair curling is a little like hula hooping – you’re either a natural or you’re not! However just like anything that is in need of skill (like hula hooping, knitting and Irish dancing!) hair curling like a pro can be taught – so if your diligent in your training and stick to the following seven rules, you too can become a king of curls, waving your curling wand like a professional. Here’s how:

#1: forgetting to prep

Do not under any circumstances put a curling wand anywhere near your prized tresses without first applying a heat protection serum. The Moroccan Oil Heat Protection Spray for example, delivers a thermal protective veil that keeps hair breakage and split ends at bay as it provides optimal protection from the heat. Remember to blow dry until completely dry as this will close the cuticle further preventing damage.

#2: curling in the wrong direction

There’s no doubt we’ve all done this particular “no-no”’ a hundred times. Whether we were sleep deprived, rushing or simply not concentrating on the task at hand, we end up with a Medusa like, untidy and unkempt mess of curls. When curling ensure you are curling away from your face, this does mean that you will need to change the direction of the wand on either side of your face.

#3: not allowing curls to ‘cool’

Patience is virtue ladies and never more so than when you’ve created gorgeous curls and your hands are itching to brush through to fix a wayward lock or two – but unless you wait for your locks to cool, you’ll end up with limp and totally un-curlable strands. This is particularly true if you pin your curls in place and remove the pins before the hair has completely cooled.

#4: trying to curl large chunks of hair

Grabbing too much hair at once is a thankless task. The heat will be unable to penetrate all the strands, leaving you with a bunch of wilting waves. Remember to section the hair carefully and as evenly as possible and curl small sections at a time for the best results.

#5: holding the iron for too long

Hands up who hasn’t seen the YouTube video of the young woman who actually burnt her hair right off her stunned little head and who hasn’t come close to this fate themselves? Sizzle is not good, in fact it’s time to put the curling wand down and walk away! Make sure to use a curling wand with varied heat settings and depending on the thickness of your hair try and use a lower heat setting. Remember protecting the integrity of your hair is vital, follicle over fashion!

#6 too much vs. too little hairspray

Just like Goldilocks with her favoured porridge, it’s vital to get your hairspray quantities just right! Spray too little and those prized curls will fall into unfavourable kinks and if you spray too much hairspray, make no mistake your hair will adopt a crispy, stiff, 1980’s beauty pageant look. Spray in moderation and support the curls perfectly! Check out our blog Hair Secrets From Celebrity Stylists for further tips!
