What is The Skinification of Hair?

It’s the emerging trend that’s on the tip of everyone’s tongue, and one we’re all going wild for in 2023. But what exactly is the “Skinification of Hair”?

Skinification of hair is essentially skincare for your hair! It’s all about bringing ingredients that were traditionally limited to skincare products into our haircare routines in order to promote a healthy scalp and hair. The scalp is an extension of the face, and thus deserves equal attention and active ingredients to help it thrive just as your skin does. These ingredients can be used in shampoos, conditioners, styling and treatment products.

What skincare ingredients should I look out for in haircare?

There are a wealth of hero ingredients creeping into their way into our haircare routines, but here are some top contenders you should look out for if you’d like to introduce Skinification to your haircare regime. Chances are, some of your favourite hair products may already include some of these!

Salicylic Acid

When Salicylic Acid is applied to skin, it helps it to shed dead skin cells from its surface layer and decreases redness and swelling. This is a particularly important ingredient in haircare for scalps with dead skin and product build-up, and it’s an ingredient present in the new Kerastase Symbiose Range, formulated to prevent and protect against dandruff.

Tea Tree

Tea tree is used in skincare as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent. When used on the hair, it calms irritated scalps and prevents build-up whilst keeping the hair moisturized. This ingredient is active in the NAK Mineral Defence Leave-in Treatment 100ml, which is designed to protect ageing hair follicles. The cooling invigorating spray clears unwanted residue, softens hardened collagen around the hair follicles and strengthens the hair from root to tip through a powerful combination of botanicals, vitamins, minerals and herbs.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is used in skincare to help exfoliation, speeding up the turnover of cells and boosting the production of collagen. It also helps to clear pores. When applied to the scalp, exfoliates and moisturises it, leaving hair healthy. This ingredient is present in the The Inkey List Glycolic Acid Exfoliating Scalp Scrub 150ml, a gentle exfoliating scrub formulated with both chemical and physical exfoliators to help remove product build-up and dead cells and leave hair looking healthy.

Hyaluronic Acid

One of the key benefits of hyaluronic acid is hydration. It also helps the skin to stretch, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When used on hair, it helps to reduce frizziness by sealing the hair’s cuticle, as well as plumping dry and damaged hair and locking in moisture. If your hair is chemically treated by bleach, blondies can enjoy products packed with Hyaluronic Acid in the Kerastase Blond Absolu line!

Ceramides

Ceramides can be thought of as a type of glue which holds skin cells together. This keeps your skin’s barrier intact, sealing in moisture. Ceramides are ideal for preventing and repairing damaged hair. You can find ceramides in the Pureology Strength Cure Shampoo and Pureology Strength Cure Conditioner, which have been specially designed as gentle, concentrated ZeroSulfate® haircare products to help fortify micro-scarred, damaged colour-treated hair.
